It took me a minute to figure out what exactly you were doing here and how it related to your artist statement, but I think I understand. Artworks that take a while to figure out are much more art than those that immediately explain their meaning. Through color, arrangement and your creative skill I think your project will be incredibly impressive, great progress so far.
I appreciate the fact that you're using your drawings to create this - so far it looks really good. I'm interested to see how this turns out!! I like the pixelated effect you're doing, it makes it look like an old Nintendo game character or something.
I really like your concept of showing the cycle of the different levels of realism in the character. I'm sure by using a drawing first to plan out what you are going to do, it makes the end result more clear while working on it. It will be interesting to see it as the finished project.
